Seed Campaign

An emergency initiative to prevent famine in Haiti and to create a “seed bank” for Haitian farmers
SEEDS for HAITI, launched in March 2009, will raise funds to buy bean and corn seeds to prevent post-hurricane famine in Haiti.

The campaign’s immediate goal is to raise $115,000 to buy seeds for 5,000 Haitian peasant farmers for the upcoming agricultural season in April, 2009.

Hundreds of Haitian peasant farmers who lost their entire crops and livestock in last September’s hurricanes are struggling to survive.

Because growing food is the quickest, most nutritious way for Haitian peasant farmers to sustain themselves – and corn and beans grow quickly – Bassin Zim is launching SEEDS for HAITI to provide immediate help for the upcoming growing season (in late April).

Farmers will contribute seeds from their new crops back to SEEDS for HAITI to help establish an ongoing “seed bank” for the future.

Hi Annie, Monsanto sent Haiti Hybrid seeds, not GMO seeds. The Native Americans were the first people to Hybridize Corn, in fact if Corn wasn't Hybridized it wouldnt even resemble the Corn you see today, Corn before Hybridization looked like a small grain of sand. I hope that Monsanto continues to send Haiti donations because Malawi also received these seeds and now they have way more than enough food to eat, they can export now.

Sounds like you are NOT using any genetically engineered seeds from companies like Monsanto. Is that true? Those type of seeds are unsuitable - you want native Creole seeds that will produce good food and seeds to perpetuate crops. It would benefit you if you publicized organics of your seeds as many recognize the dangers of the altered seeds and would be likely to support your efforts -if they are indeed organic.
